Hi Matt: You make several excellent points. First, rewarding people for showing up - similar to the employee of the month which is too often based on whose turn it is. Recognition has to mean something and to do that it needs to be outstanding, not simply acceptable. If you don't clarify what outstanding performance is then it will be left to each person to interpret and because not everyone will work to a high standard you get variances in performance. Give people a target to aim for. (My other peeve in this same area is that lately the media refers to almost anyone as a hero. Unfortunately, this practice cheapens a word that should be reserved for the real heroes in this world. Sorry, had to vent.) While I don't believe you can motivate people, I do believe that if you understand what motivates them then you can target your recognition and incentive systems on those things. As well, identify what resonates with your top performers. When doing surveys focus on them. They are the ones you want to keep and attract more of, so your incentive system should be reflective of what they want. Thanks for asking. Janice
